A human-rights approach to health: the Ivan Stone lecture

November 4, 2010 at 12:16 pm

Alicia Ely Yamin, the Joseph H. Flom Fellow on Global Health and Human Rights at Harvard Law School and special advisor to Amnesty International’s global campaign on poverty, will present “A Rights-Based Approach to Health” on Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 8 p.m., in Richardson Auditorium, in Morse-Ingersoll Hall. The lecture is presented under the sponsorship of the Ivan and Janice Stone World Outlook Endowment Fund.

A rights-based approach to health involves recognizing the basic human right to health, and allowing human rights standards and principles to guide health policy making and programming. Yamin, who received both her J.D. degree and a Master of Public Health degree from Harvard University, has worked extensively in this field. She has published numerous scholarly articles and books on rights-based approaches to health, and is particularly recognized as an advocate for maternal health.

The Stone Lecture is an event held during Beloit College’s annual International Education Week commemorating the contributions of Ivan Stone, former professor and dean of the college, and his wife Janice Stone. Both were strong advocates for international education and experience. The World Outlook Endowment Fund, which sponsors this annual lecture, also helps make study abroad possible for students with financial need.
