Meet: Alex Allen’14, executive and events intern in upcoming film festival

Name: Alex Allen’14
Hometown:
Chesapeake Beach, Md.
Major/minor:
Political science and religious studies double major.
What brought me to Beloit:
The people (and the stickers they provided in the view book).

My favorite class so far, and why you should take it: A tie between Secularism and Fundamentalism with Natalie Gummer or Human Rights Seminar with Beth Dougherty. For me, both not only were the most challenging, but also the most eye-opening. It was such a rewarding experience for me to be pushed to question my own assumptions and view of the world.

You may have seen me: Laughing loudly in Commons.

How I got involved with the Beloit International Film Festival: I went to an information session on campus and really connected with the people that already worked there.

What the experience has taught me: I have worked at the film festival for three years now. The biggest lesson (although there are countless ones) I will take away from this is to always do what you love. There are filmmakers who come from such varying backgrounds: Spain, China, Brazil, Ghana, you name it. A lot of these filmmakers were drawn to film despite the fact that they didn’t major in it in college or have any interest in it as a kid. You never know where life will take you or where you will end up. The common thread between all these filmmakers is that they are all following their passion!

The BIFF movie/event you shouldn't miss: The BIFF Awards on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. and/or the sing-along on Friday, Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m. They are both at the Eclipse Center, and both are huge community events that are always packed and a guaranteed good time. This year’s sing-along will be The Sound of Music!

What are you working on? At BIFF I’m currently planning all of the special events in town for the festival. At Beloit, I am working on my thesis. Not sure on my topic yet, but I’m crossing my fingers that I can do something on counter-extremism in Southeast Asia.

What’s on your desert island jukebox? “The Keeper”- Bonobo; “Heaven” – DJ Sammy ; “Get Free”- Major Lazer; “Dreams”- Fleetwood Mac; “Express Yourself”- Diplo

Favorite meal? Tie between mac and cheese and sushi.

What can’t you live without? My family, my yoga mat, and my headphones.
