In the Stacks: the library staff welcomes you back

From the staff of the Morse Library:In the Stacks: the library staff welcomes you back

Welcome, we’ve been expecting you. Staff in and around the library have spent the summer making a number of adjustments.  We hope you are as excited as we are about:

Hanging out until 1 a.m. Last year the library began opening a bit earlier in the morning, this year we’re answering the other popular request and have arranged a trial extension for building hours, remaining open an hour longer during the regular academic periods. Staff will be monitoring use during the day and evening periods; the pilot will be rated a success if occupancy patterns follow existing trends for late-night use.

Simple sign-in for off-campus access to resources. You can still take the time to edit browser settings and preferences when working with subscription resources from off-campus, but we think you’ll prefer the new method – click on resource links from library web pages or the catalog and when prompted, enter your Beloit College network ID and password. For more information, visit our revised off-campus access information page.

Bigger and brighter catalog.  With the final step of a recent upgrade applied, BelCat, the library catalog, has an updated look. It also has a lot more content. Staff spent the summer loading records to make it easier to find and connect to the library’s 83,000 e-books.

New printers.  Keeping up with high-use demands squeezed the life out of some of our older equipment. Our four most popular workstation groups now have brand-new equipment. We hope this improves everyone’s experience. If you do encounter problems with any printers in the building, please report the problem (large or small) to library staff.

Year-round fun. Drop by the table at the front of the library for stress relief or a study break. First up, use the posted map and oversized pin-board to share your favorite local gems with new and returning students, faculty and staff, make your own personalized weekly planner, and throw a name into the box for the Greatest Literary Villain contest.  Character nominations are welcome until Sept. 16 via paper ballot or the Beloit College Library Facebook page (why not like us while you’re there?). Voting for head-to-head bracket match-ups begins in late September and by Thanksgiving break, we’ll have our top villain.

That is just the beginning.  We have many more ideas for this semester and those to come, but would like to hear from you, too.  Library staff will be out asking questions and testing ideas.  Whether we’ve asked for a moment of your time - or not - we hope you’ll share your opinions and suggestions, and most importantly, ask questions!
