Dr. Anthea Butler, Graduate Chair, Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania and author of the forthcoming book, The Gospel According to Sarah: How Sarah Palin's Tea Party Angels Are Galvanizing the Religious Right, will give a public lecture titled ""Sarah Palin and the Church of Americana: How Sarah Palin and the Right are selling the gospel of America".
Description:
With the election of President Obama in 2008, competing visions of America became important to right wing leaders and religionists. The construction of American Exceptionalism in the last four years has been the purview of Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck and David Barton, using right wing religion and distorted history to push back against President Obama's "socialism". Professor Butler will discuss the reasons behind their advocacy of a certain brand of American Exceptionalism, its historical antecedents, and implication for not only the political process, but how America is viewed in the world today.
This event is free and open to the campus and greater Beloit community.
