The success of social networking services brings with it a range of interesting legal challenges. Some are not new to Internet law, such as the reconciliation of different approaches to speech, reputation and privacy across a range of legal systems. Others seem to have an increased profile, such as the responsibilities of service providers, or the vexed questions of data protection within services founded on principles of 'sharing.' This lecture will consider a selection of legal and political disputes in which Facebook, Twitter and other services have been involved (from the U.S., Europe, and elsewhere), and consider how we can learn lessons from similar disputes in the earlier days of the Internet.
This event is free and open to students, faculty, staff, and guests.
