Sugar Cane Alley is a 1983 film about a young orphan, José, who lives with his grandmother in a small village on the French-speaking island of Martinique in the 1930s. José wins a partial scholarship to attend high school in the capital, where he deals with pressure and accusations of plagiarism. The film is based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Joseph Zobel.
