Did Halloween leave you hankering for even more Halloween? Then join the Classics department as we sponsor a spooky guest lecture by Brian Channing Walters, Assistant Professor of Classics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Professor Walters' lecture, "Lucan's Walking Dead," will address the challenges of translating ancient zombies for a modern audience; given the recent cultural popularity of zombies in America, one must translate not just a text, but an ancient Roman way of seeing zombies in the world which takes into account a modern reader's expectations of cultural zombie norms. Professor Walters will also treat us to his translation of the relevant section of Lucan's "Bellum Civile."
This event is free and open to the campus and community.
