cNothing about us without us: Tales of the Gadjo
Bill New, Professor of Education and Youth Studies
In this presentation, I will reflect critically on more than ten years of work concerning Romani education, politics, and culture: which is to say, the development of my gadjo identity. The gadjo is a person who simply is not Roma. Historically, the Roma have been highly suspicious of gadje, for good reason, and many gadje who have taken the Roma as their subject(s) are not at all well-regarded by Roma, even or especially when they have received positive recognition in the "big world." Others though might be the best of friends, confidantes and collaborators, lovers and spouses, but no amount of familiarity can render a gadjo into a Roma. What is the play of identities that produces these alliances and oppositions, and how do these relationships affect the struggle for Romani rights, recognition and well-being?
