Good Hair (2009), a documentary film screening

Date: Friday, December 7th, 2012

Time: 7:00 pm

Duration: 3 hours

Location: Wilson Theatre, Mayer Hall

Contact: Daksha Howard

The film focuses on African American women's hair, including the styling industry surrounding it, the acceptable look of African American women's hair in society, and the effects of both upon African American culture. The main focus in the film is the extreme lengths that black women are willing to go through in order to look a certain way. A common ideology in the American culture is that the straighter the hair, the prettier the woman, so black women are willing to spend thousands of dollars on their hair, even if they cannot afford to do so. Eye-opening facts emerge, including that there are practically no African-American owned hair product companies: they're mostly Asian.
