Understanding Racial Disparities in Infant Mortality in Beloit: Bringing the Liberal Arts into Practice

Marion Field Fass, Professor of Biology, co-chair Health and Society

For the past 6 years I’ve been involved with community residents and state agencies on projects that address disparities in rates of infant mortality between babies born to African American and White mothers in Beloit.  In this talk I will frame the interdisciplinary and complex problem of racial disparities in infant mortality using national and local level data.  I will discuss ways that this issue connects across the curriculum, giving students an opportunity to experience the “liberal arts in practice” as they analyze data, explore theories and assist community agencies in finding and using data and resources to write grants.
