Prof. Edward Friedman of UW-Madison helped edit and write the forward for Yang Jisheng's monumental study, Tombstone, about the largest human-made famine in history caused in China by Mao Zedong's disastrous policies of the Great Leap Forward (GLF, 1958-1960).   Prof. Friedman will speak about lessons one can learn from that book about the nature and causes of mass atrocities as well as how the GLF has been treated in China since the death of Chairman Mao.
