The department of dance will host guest artist Nandhini Ashok, Classical Indian Dance, for a two week residency.  Ashok will be choreographing a dance for Beloit students to perform in Chelonia, teaching technique classes, giving a performance and also teaching a short course in Classical Indian Dance history with ties to music and painting.

1 p.m. - Auditions in Hendricks Center studio 1. That dance will be performed in Chelonia on February 6-9, 2014. The rehearsals will be really intense for two weeks while Nandhini is here (several hours per night) and then after Sept 14 will be about once or twice a week until Chelonia.

Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Hendricks Center studio 1, Ashok will do a solo performance in which she will both dance and explain the art form. Admission is free but seating is limited so people should arrive early to get a seat.

In addition to the dance she is choreographing and the performance she is giving, she is also offering a short .25 unit course that students can do as a 390 in either TDMS or ANST.  The course will be mostly lecture and discussion and will cover the history and elements of ancient Indian Dance forms (with ties to music and painting). The students will meet at times that are arranged by the group once they know what schedule works for all of them. Her residency lasts until September 14. Interested students should come to an informational meeting on Sunday, September 1 at 3 p.m. in the Hendricks Center Dance Studio 1 to learn more about the structure of the course. No dance ability/experience required.

You may have noticed that the meeting is after the audition. So, students who want to audition should come at 1 p.m. and stay for the meeting if they are also interested in the course. If they just want info about the course they should come at 3 p.m.
