Abstract:
Hanryu (韓流Korean Wave) refers to the phenomenal growth in the popularity of Korean entertainment and culture that began in the 1990’s, especially in Japan.Currently many Japanese people of all generations listen to K-pop, watch Korean TV dramas and learn the Korean language. During the Edo period (1615-1867), there was a similar cultural impact that the Joseon Tongshinsa (朝鮮通信使) brought to Japan. The Joseon Tongshinsa was the official envoy group that the Joseon King dispatched to the Tokugawa Shogun at his request. The Joseon Tongshinsa’s visit ignited an intense interest in all things Joseon and hugely influenced Japanese culture.
