Milking the Rhino tells the story of wildlife conservation from the perspective of the people who regularly endure the danger and incur the costs of living with wild animals. Created after a century of "white man's conservation," which displaced rural Africans and turned their land into national parks and game reserves, Milking the Rhino focuses on the contemporary tensions the Masaai and Himba tribes of Kenya and Nambia - two of the oldest cattle cultures on earth - face with balancing conservation, economic development, and tradition. 

Milking the Rhino explores the potential opportunities and challenges of community-based conservation, a participatory and people-centered approach to wildlife management. The documentary also underscores how scarce land and water resources, limited opportunities for income generation, and conflict between traditional livelihoods and Western expectations, continue to exacerbate tensions between communities and conservationists. 

This award-winning documentary will be followed by a panel discussion led by Rachel Ellett, Diep Phan and Jennifer Esperanza, professors from Beloit College's Political Science, Economics and Anthropology departments.
