Ellida is drawn to the sea. Her father was a lighthouse-keeper, she swims compulsively and she is haunted by a brief affair with a mysterious sailor. She marries a respectable doctor and struggles to live a “normal” life, but the sea will not release its hold on her. When the sailor suddenly returns to claim her as his own, Ellida must choose between her family on land and the seductive lure of the sea. Set in Norway at the end of the 19th century, this poetic play explores the conflict between security and adventure and the liberation of human choice.
