"Silk Road Sounds," an Asian Studies faculty research seminar with presenter Paul Stanley.

Asia is filled with a variety of musical traditions and musical instruments. These have evolved in both time and space; understanding this evolutionary process could yield insight into historical events, technological advancements, or the past cultural and physical geography of the region. We highlight this by studying the musical nature and acoustical physics of one specific class of
instruments---the transverse flute. With this work we have been able to develop a computer program that can generate the sound of ancient flutes based on observations from photographs.

This event is free and open to the campus and community.
