Interested in the digital humanities, the history of the book, or popular serials—whether Mad Men, The Wire, or earlier novels that crucially shaped how we watch and read today? Professor Bernstein, will discuss her use of cutting-edge digital tools, material culture, and blogs to teach and study nineteenth-century serial fiction. How might reading serial numbers “by numbers” offer us new and exciting ways to understand language, literature, and culture?

Bernstein is Sally Mead Hands Bascom Professor of English at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She has published Confessional Subjects: Revelations of Gender and Power in Victorian Literature and Culture, a co-edited collection of essays titled Victorian Vulgarity, and editions of two 1888 novels by Amy Levy. She has also written widely on nineteenth-century periodical print culture, and recently spearheaded an active blog/reading project entitled Serial Readers. Bernstein is currently completing a book on gender and the Reading Room of the British Museum.
