Buc Report: New school year, new sports seasons

August 28, 2013 at 9:11 pm

As the new academic year kicks off, so do a half dozen sports seasons.

Here’s a look at when those first games and matches of the season get underway, along with what first-year athletes are most excited about this season.

Women’s Tennis

First match: Friday (Aug. 30), 4 p.m., at home against UW-LaCrosse

“Since it's my first year playing, I don't really know who I'm most looking forward to beating besides everyone of course. We won our first unofficial match yesterday, and that was awesome. I'm most excited about just being able to play and have fun with all my teammates, while hopefully bringing home a lot of wins as well.” - Samantha Kinard’17, Waukegan, Ill.

Volleyball

First match: Friday (Aug. 30), 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., at home against Rockford College and Finlandia University

“I am excited I joined the volleyball team because it is a great way to make friends, and I already love this group of girls! They have taught me so much about college in the first few days I've been here, and a lot about myself and what I am capable of doing on the court.” - Cheyenne Moffatt’17, Twin Lakes, Wis.

First game: Friday (Aug. 30), 5:30 p.m., in Milwaukee against Wisconsin Lutheran College

“I'm really looking forward to our game against Grinnell (on Sept. 28). Prior to coming to Beloit I lived in Grinnell, so it'll be fun for me to return home to my family and community for the purpose of soccer!” -Marina Bagnoli’17, Grinnell, Iowa

Men’s and Women’s Cross Country

“I am most excited to join the cross country team because there are great people on the team and Coach (Dave) Eckburg is fantastic. I also love being in shape and having the opportunity to get back to where I used to be. I am just very grateful to have the chance and support to be on the team.” – Sarah Kraemer’17, Greensboro, N.C.

Football

First game: Next Saturday, Sept. 7, 6 p.m., at home against University of Chicago

“The game that I am personally most excited for is the game against Ripon College (on Oct. 26). I have a close friend that goes there, and he plays on the opposite side of the ball than me. It is going to be a lot of fun to play against him, and it should bring back some good memories!” – Mason Dixon’17, Walworth, Wis.
