Beloit, WI -- In a tale of two halves, the Beloit College Women's Lacrosse team held on in the face of Benedictine University's second-half comeback to post an 18-17 Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference victory at Strong Stadium on Sunday.
The Bucs had a very productive first half, scoring 13 goals on 17 shots on net to build a 13-5 advantage at the break. Sara Fithian scored four goals while Sarah Pipal had three and Libby Storrick, Michelle Dillon and Marie Bonine two each to establish the lead. Celeste Jenkins made seven saves in net to help the lead stand up.
The rain, which started at the beginning of the second 30 minutes, and the Eagles made things interesting in the second half, out-scoring the Buccaneers 12-5. BU trailed 17-11 with 9:38 left after Fithian's man-up goal but then scored five straight to pull within 17-16 with 1:11 left. After Fithian scored her second power-play goal to give Beloit a two-goal cushion with 50 seconds left Benedictine pulled back within one at the 33-second mark with a man-down goal. But the Bucs controlled the ensuing draw and ran out the clock for the win.
Fithian finished with six goals and an assist while Storrick had two goals and five assists. Drexler had two free position goals to go with three assists and Dillon had two goals and two assists. Pipal finished with three goals and Bonine two. Bonine played the second half in goal and made five saves. Jenkins, in the field in the second half, scored a man-down goal.
Beloit has a few days off before another big MWLC game at home on Thursday when they host Concordia University. Faceoff is at 7:00 p.m.
