Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Lacrosse team had control, let it slip a bit, and then took it back on the way to a 17-6 Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference win over Fontbonne University at Strong Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Sara Fithian scored just over two minutes into the game but Fontbonne answered a minute later. Iris Esquivel then put Beloit in front for good with a free position goal at 25:18 of the opening half. The goal started a four-score run that made it 5-1, with Libby Storrick scoring three straight. The Griffins scored with 12:30 left to break up the run before the Bucs scored three more in succession, two by Michelle Dillon and one by Sarah Pipal. Fontbonne scored with under two minutes left in the half but Fithian scored at the buzzer to make it 9-3 at the break.
Fithian made it three straight goals with back-to-back scores to open the second half before Fontbonne tried to climb back into the game with three goals in less than two minutes to pull within 11-6. But the Buccaneers closed the game with six straight goals, three by Fithian, two by Pipal and one by Storrick, to seal the win.
Fithian finished with seven goals and an assist, the third time she scored seven in a game in the program's short history. Storrick added four goals and three assists while Pipal had three goals and Dillon two goals and three assists. Marine Bonine got the win in net with six saves.
Beloit has the week off before getting back on the field with two games next weekend, playing an MWLC contest at Carthage College in Kenosha next Saturday at 12 noon and hosting the University of Dallas at Strong next Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
