Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team kept working over these last couple of weeks, knowing that their hard work would pay off. Wednesday night they got their payday with a big second half to top Lake Forest College 79-63 in Flood Arena, snapping a nine-game losing streak.
The first 12 minutes of the opening half were close until the Foresters put together a 10-2 run to turn a 25-24 deficit into a 34-27 lead with 5:56 left. But the Buccaneers used the last five-plus minutes for a 12-3 run and went into the lockerroom with a 39-37 advantage.
Beloit stayed hot in the second half, turning their two-point halftime advantage into a 53-39 lead with 15 minutes left, relying on a big 14-2 run that changed the game. LFC never got closer than nine the rest of the way, with the Bucs going up by as much as 23 late.
Free throws told the tale for Beloit as they hit on 38 of 48 while Lake Forest was just 12 of 16. The Bucs shot 40% from the field for the game. The Foresters finished at 34.8%.
Lauren McNanna and Lana Wieseman both had double-doubles, with McNanna getting 25 points, including four three-pointers, and a career-high 11 rebounds and Wieseman scoring 19 points with a career-tying 13 rebounds. Between the two they were 13-22 from the field and 13-14 from the charity stripe. Laura Panicali added 10 points. Kelsey Horvath dished out a career-high five assists to go with her career-tying best seven points.
The Buccaneers head back on the road looking to keep that winning feeling at Grinnell College on Saturday afternoon. Action begins at 3:00 p.m.
