Beloit, WI -- It didn't look good early but by the end of the opening half the Beloit College Women's Basketball team had found themselves and kept going on the way to a 71-64 victory over Lawrence University at Flood Arena on Saturday afternoon. The win was the Bucs' first in Midwest Conference play.
The Vikings had things going their way early on, scoring the first seven points of the game and building their lead as large as 13, that at 20-7 at the 11:31 mark. Lawrence still led 26-16 with 5:43 left in the half before the Buccaneers closed the first 20 minutes on an 18-3 run to lead 34-29 at the break.
LU stayed close for the first seven minutes of the second half, trailing by just five at 48-43 with 13:13 left. But a 0-1 Beloit run put the Buccaneers back up by 13 just under the ten-minute mark. The Vikings got no closer that six the rest of the way as the Bucs answered every challenge.
Beloit shot 52.2% in the first half (12-23) and 50% for the game, posting the win despite 23 turnovers (to Lawrence's 12).
Kandace Fox led the way with 18 points while Lauren McNanna added 14 and Faith Jones 11. McNanna and Sarah Stariha both grabbed seven rebounds.
The Buccaneers have the coming week to get ready for back-to-back games next weekend when they host Knox College on Friday night and Lake Forest College on Saturday afternoon. Tipoff on Friday is at 5:00 p.m. and at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
