Beloit, WI -- The best thing the Beloit College Women's Basketball team could do to cure their recent five-game losing streak was score a win. And returning to their home court for the first time in nearly a month did just the trick as they dominated Mount Mary College 93-21 on Friday night.
The 72-point margin of victory was the largest in program history and the biggest since they topped Rockford College 84-22 way back on December 5, 1995.
It wasn't that bad early on. Beloit used a 12-0 run in the first eight minutes of the game to open a 20-4 lead with 12:20 left. But Mount Mary battled back with six straight points to pull back within 10 at 20-10 at the midway point. The Bucs then stepped on the gas, running off a 28-6 stretch to close out the half and lead 48-16 at the break. Kirstin Acosta scored 11 in the first 20 minutes.
The Buccaneers out-scored the Blue Angels 45-5 in the second half, going up by 40 on a Faith Jones layin at the 15:01 mark; by 50 on a jumper by Steffany Streb with 10:23 remaining; by 60 when Claire Bush hit a jumper at 7:04; and by 70 when Bush hit a layup with 3:00 left.
Beloit shot 57.8% from the field (37-64), had 22 assists and 14 steals.
Everyone on the team scored, led by four players in double figures. Jones and Maddie Sychta each had 14, with Sychta's a career high, Acosta finished with 11 and Jenna Larsen scored a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds.
The Bucs will face considerably tougher competition in their next contest, the last one before they take a break for finals and the Holidays, traveling to 31st-ranked (D3Hoops.com) Carthage College on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
