Monmouth, IL -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team came back several times Friday night but they couldn't overcome a late surge in a 76-70 loss at Monmouth College.
Monmouth broke away from a close game six minutes in with a five-point run but the Buccaneers kept things close throughout the rest of the opening half, tying it at 35-all with 37 seconds left and trailing by just one at 38-37 at the break.
The Fighting Scots came out of halftime on a 10-2 run to take a 48-39 advantage less than three minutes in and held that lead for the next three minutes. But a 6-0 run by the Buccaneers pulled Beloit back to within 52-49 at the 13:38 mark.
MC pushed their lead back up to seven at 60-53 midway through the half but the Bucs came back again, using a 13-5 run over the next six minutes to take a 66-65 lead with four minutes left.
Monmouth then made the deciding run, a 6-0 spurt that put them up by five with just over two minutes remaining and the Buccaneers couldn't get closer than five in the final minute.
Lauren McNanna led Beloit with 15 points while MacKenzie Hilliard had 11 and Kirstin Acosta ten. Sarah Stariha and Kandace Fox each scored nine.
The Buccaneers are back on the court Saturday after when they take on Illinois College in Jacksonville at 1:00 p.m.
