Lake Forest, IL -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team kept battling back but came up just short in a 73-71 loss at Lake Forest College on Sunday in the Midwest Conference opener for both teams.
A tight game early, the teams were tied at 11-11 six minutes in before LFC went on a 14-2 run to take a 23-13 lead just under midway through the half. The Foresters pushed their lead to 12 at 31-19 two minutes later before Beloit mounted a comeback.
Faith Jones hit a jumper and a pair of free throws to bring the Bucs within three with 29 seconds left in the half and the Sarah Stariha canned a buzzer-beating jumper in the lane to cut the deficit to 37-36 at the break.
The Buccaneers continued their run into the second half and took their first lead since the opening seconds at the 18:33 mark on Kirstin Acosta's layin. But Lake Forest went on a 10-4 run over the next three-plus minutes to regain control.
Again Beloit battled back and tied things up at 66-all with 1:27 left in regulation. LFC went up by four but a pair of Acosta free throws pulled it back to within two with 21 seconds left. The Foresters pushed their lead to 73-68 in the final ten seconds before Lauren McNanna hit a three-pointer with one second left. But LFC inbounded to end the game.
Stariha finished with a career-high 20 points to lead the way. Acosta posted career-bests in both points and rebounds with 16 and nine. Jones added 11 and McNanna ten.
The Buccaneers have the week to get ready for their next game Friday at Monmouth College. Tipoff is at 5:00 p.m.
