Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team was in a gift-giving mood on Saturday in Flood Arena. And they can be excused for being selfish with their gift to themselves in a 64-54 win over Lakeland College.
Lakeland jumped out early in the game, building a seven-point 15-8 lead six minutes in. But Beloit settled in with an 8-0 run over the next four minutes to take a one-point lead at 16-15 midway through the half. The teams exchanged the lead for the rest of the half, with neither leading by more than three. The Bucs led 35-34 at the break.
In a change from previous games the Buccaneers came out of halftime hot and scored the first seven points of the second half to go up seven four minutes in at 41-34. But the Muskies chipped away and finally tied it at 42-all midway through.
Beloit then made the decisive run of the game, outscoring LC 12-2 over the next four minutes. Lakeland never got closer than four the rest of the way and coasted in for the win, just their second in the last nine games with the Muskies.
The Buccaneers shot 55.8% (24-430 for the game, by far their best mark of the season, while holding the Muskies to 36.1% shooting. They shot 68.2% (15-22) in the opening half. They also won the rebound battle in a big way, 41-23.
Diana Sopkowicz led the Bucs with 13 points. Kirstin Acosta had nine points and a career-high seven rebounds. Amanda Moore, Kandace Fox and Jenna Larsen each added eight points. four different players had at least three assists, led by Moore's four.
Beloit has a break for the Holidays before closing out 2010 at Loras College on December 31. Tipoff in Dubuque is at 1:00 p.m.
