Buccaneer Volleyball Squad Closes 2013 Season

Leah KruckmanBeloit, WI -- The Beloit College Volleyball team closed out their 2013 season over the weekend with a pair of tough Midwest Conference matches, falling 3-1 to Ripon College on Friday night and Lake Forest College on Saturday afternoon.

In Saturday's match the Foresters took the first two sets, winning 25-14 and 25-17.  In the first set the Bucs were within 16-13 before LFC went on a 9-0 tear to close it out.  The second set was much the same as Beloit pulled to within 19-17 before Lake Forest scored six unanswered for the win.

The Buccaneers came from behind to win the third set 28-26 and keep the match going.  Trailing 23-15 Beloit outscored the Foresters 13-3 down the stretch for the win.  LFC quelled a similar comeback in the fourth set, holding on after Beloit had pulled to within 23-21 with a rally.

Senior Leah Kruckman, playing her final match for Beloit, had nine kills, as did Carolyn Stransky.  Stransky also had 29 set assists while Kruckman added two service aces.  Julianne Gruenhagen made 19 digs and Bethany Stavrakas 11.

On Friday night Ripon won the final two sets after Beloit had evened the match at one each with a second set win.  RC won 25-19, 23-25, 25-18, 25-15.

In the opening set the Red Hawks scored five of the final six points after Beloit had pulled to within 20-18.  In set #2 the Bucs took control with a 10-6 run in the middle of the set and then held on at the end after Ripon had come back to tie things up at 23-all.

In both the third and fourth sets the Red Hawks grabbed the lead early and kept stretching it out to record the match win.

Taylor Lewis had 12 kills and Stavrakas 11 to lead the attack while Molly Schulting and Kruckman each had nine.  Kruckman's final kill of the match was the 400th of her career.  Stransky made 36 set assists.  Gruenhagen had 19 digs and Stavrakas 17 while Kruckman also added five blocks, one solo.
