Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Volleyball team finally got to play at home after 19 days away but Illinois College spoiled the homecoming with a 3-1 win on Friday night in Flood Arena.
The Lady Blues took the match 25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17.
In the opening set Beloit had pulled back to within two points at 23-21, the closest they'd been since they trailed 11-10, but the Lady Blues scored the last two points for the win. In set two the Buccaneers built a big lead early, going up 14-4 at one point, and then held off IC's comeback effort by scoring three of the last four points.
In the third set the Bucs led 11-10 before Illinois College rattled off seven straight points and Beloit couldn't catch up, though they did pull back within 21-17 late. In the final set the Lady Blues raced out to a 13-5 advantage and held off the Buccaneers the rest of the way. Beloit got no closer than five after the early deficit.
Leah Kruckman had a great night to lead Beloit's attack, recording 19 kills, which ties for the fourth-most since 2008, and a .293 attack percentage. Fellow senior Molly Schulting had ten kills and a .212 attack percentage. Carolyn Stransky had 42 set assists, her second-highest output this season. Julianne Gruenhagen made 23 digs to lead the defense while Kruckman had four blocks, one solo, and Bethany Stavrakas three.
Beloit has a few days before stepping out of Midwest Conference play on Tuesday at Mount Mary College. They then close out the home and regular season with matches next Friday against Ripon College and Saturday against Lake Forest.
