Head Injury Guidelines
Any head, face, neck, or jaw injury has the potential to be significant. The symptoms from a blow to the head area or through significant contact may not appear until later in the day or even the following day. The attached signs and symptoms are provided to give guidance when an athlete needs to be transported to the hospital vs. evaluated by Staff ATC’s / Team MD.
DO NOT provide any pain medication unless recommended by evaluating MD or Team MD.
After-hours injury or illness
If emergent, notify security and / or transport to the emergency room for care. In non-emergent or life-threatening situations contact the Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) / Athletic Director (AD) for more instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who would provide emergency first aid at the Sports Center / Stadium?
On-site ATC
In the absence of ATC?
Student assistant (SA) or coach
When should I call EMS?
When in an emergency or situation beyond your capabilities
Who and how will EMS be summoned?
If an ATC is present, they will assume control of the situation and provide directions. If a coach or staff member is not directly involved with providing care, they should be trying to manage bystanders, teams, etc.
What phone should be used?
A landline call is best, but cell phones are acceptable. When using landlines on campus call 9-911, security is immediately notified. Make sure you know where phones are and how to get to them.
Where should EMS be referred for site entry in the event they are called?
Each venue has specific instructions. Refer to attached pages for details.
Who should provide access and guide EMS when called?
Security should be notified in every emergency. EMS direction is their priority. In the event they are not yet on scene, a staff member with appropriate keys should greet EMS at prearranged door / entry.
Where are the first aid kits?
Each team has a stocked kit through the Athletic Trainers. Your student assistant should have it at every practice. If you do not have a kit, there is a small kit at the front desk of the Sports Center and in the pool by the lifeguard.
Where are the campus AED’s located?
- Next to the elevator on the first floor of the Sports Center
- Next to the Athletic Training room entrance on the lower floor of the Sports Center
- In the Athletic Training room, by the north entry door, at the stadium
- Security van
- Pearson Hall (DK’s)
- Commons
Where is the athlete emergency info and insurance info?
Each team has a binder provided and cared for by the SA for the field and travel. There are also the copies in the athlete’s medical file in the Athletic Trainer’s office.
Who should travel with the athlete in the event they are transported?
Usually an assistant coach or ATC if available
Who should be notified in the event of an injury?
The ATC and AD (if not present) should receive phone calls to arrange care and monitoring if needed.
- Please remember to document as much as possible if the ATC’s are not present, it will greatly help with providing care for the athlete later.
- The AD or ATC will notify parents in the event of injury.
- Also remember that you (as coaches and staff members) are bound by HIPAA laws and cannot provide any info (even names) to individuals not directly involved with the victim’s care.
