Beloit College entered a new era on the gridiron in the Fall of 2006 as Chris Brann took over as the 31st coach in the Buccaneers 115-year storied football history.

Brann came to Beloit from Carleton College, a prestigious and highly ranked academic NCAA Division III institution in Northfield, Minn. Brann served as head coach at Carleton for five seasons. One of his 2005 victories was against the Buccaneers in a season-opening 35-28 triumph. Carleton is a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, regarded as one of the toughest football leagues in the country. The Knights produced two All-Americans

during Brann’s brief tenure there.

Brann is the first new football coach at Beloit since 1977, when Ed DeGeorge was hired to take over the program. DeGeorge served Beloit for 29 years and accumulated an impressive and College record 135 victories. Brann takes over a program that has produced 400 victories in 115 years.

Brann has a sparkling resume that includes stints at the University of Chicago, the University of Rochester ( New York), Robert Morris University ( Pennsylvania), Marietta College ( Ohio), and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. At all five of those institutions, he served as an assistant football coach, and was the defensive coordinator at both Chicago and Rochester. Under his leadership at Chicago, the Maroons ranked second nationally in total defense at the NCAA Division III level in 2000 and set five school records during his stay. Chicago also won two University Athletic Association championships during his three years there.

At Carleton, he restored a football program that was moribund. When he took over before the 2001 season, the Knights had 22 players on their roster. This past season, they dressed 81, which was the second-largest squad in school history. The 4-6 record compiled in 2005 in the always-tough MIAC was the best record by the Knights in 10 years. Under Brann’s tutelage, Carleton was extremely balanced on offense in 2005, gaining an average of 150.4 yards on the ground and 149.5 through the air. The Knights ranked fourth in their league in pass defense, seventh in total defense and seventh in total offense.

A 1991 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, Brann was a three-year letterwinner as a linebacker. After spending one season at Indiana High School in Pennsylvania and a spring at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Brann coached the defensive line at Marietta College in Ohio. He then moved on to Robert Morris as special teams coordinator and linebackers coach from 1994-96. While at Robert Morris, he earned his master’s degree in business education and coached under Joe Walton, former head coach of the New York Jets, and Dan Radakovich, who has 17 years of NFL coaching experience. Brann then moved on to Rochester and served as the defensive coordinator before relocating to Chicago.
