East Peoria, IL -- The Beloit College Softball team completed their run in the MWC Softball Classic Sunday with a pair of wins, topping Lake Forest College 3-2 and Grinnell College 8-0 to finish the weekend 2-4.
Jennifer Zucker struck out 17 in the two games, including a no-hitter with ten punch-outs against Grinnell, to set a new Beloit single-season strikeout mark with 141. She broke the record of Hall of Honor member Jamie Cassette, who had 133 strikeouts in 1996.
The no-hitter is just the fourth in Buccaneer Softball history, the first since Katy Nilson and Stacy Salomone combined to shut down Carroll on April 4, 2007.
In the first game against LFC, the Bucs jumped on top in the third inning on Kandace Fox's two-run single, plating two unearned runs. But the Foresters came back in the fourth with two of their own to tie it up. Tara Grode knocked in what proved to be the game-winner in the sixth, plating Mikayla Martin, who had walked to lead off the inning.
In the Grinnell game Zucker took care of the Pioneer bats while the Bucs kept the pressure on at the plate. Fox gave Zucker all the runs she'd need in the first inning with a two-run single, scoring Tala Cornell and Bethany Stavrakas. Emily Dorjath made it 4-0 in the third when she singled in Megan Salm and the Fox drove in her third run of the game in the fifth with another single.
Cornell then ended the game early in the sixth with her fourth home run of the season, a three-run shot that put the Buccaneers up 8-0.
Beloit has the week off before getting back on the field next Saturday when they host Lawrence University for an MWC doubleheader at the Strong Complex Softball Field. The first game begins at 1:00 p.m.
