East Peoria, IL -- The Beloit College Softball team dropped two games on the opening day of the Midwest Conference Softball Classic Friday, losing 5-4 to Monmouth College in nine innings in the opener before a 9-0 decision to Illinois College in the second game.
In the nightcap IC scored once in the opening inning and twice in the second before exploding for six runs in the fourth to end the game early. Emily Dorjath had the lone Beloit hit in the game, singling with two out in the fourth inning.
In the first game the Bucs jumped on top in the top of the third when Tala Cornell scored on a wild pitch after doubling with one out in the inning. Jen Zucker made it 2-0 in the fourth when she grounded out with the bases loaded to drive in Dorjath.
The Buccaneers pushed their lead to 4-0 in the sixth. Dorjath led off with a home run to center, her third round-tripper of the season. Tara Grode then drove in Jordyn Ciochon with a single. But the Fighting Scots weren't done, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to force extra innings.
After the Buccaneers couldn't score in the eighth and ninth, MC pushed across the winning run with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
The Bucs continue the Classic on Saturday with two more games, taking on Cornell College at 11:00 a.m. before playing Knox College at 1:00 p.m.
