Kissimmee, FL -- The Beloit College Softball team went up against two of the top 15 teams in the nation in Division III on Tuesday at the Rebel Spring Games, and giving them unearned runs is not a good idea.
The Buccaneers fell to #5-ranked Roanoke College of Virginia 10-0 in their first game before dropping a 10-0 decision to #13-ranked Trine University of Indiana in the late game.
Against Roanoke, Beloit gave up seven unearned runs in the first two innings, the final five of those in the second inning after two were out. The Maroons scored twice in the bottom of the first and added those five in the second. They tacked on three runs in the fourth to make it a 10-0 game.
The Bucs couldn't get much going on offense. Bethany Stavrakas got Beloit's first hit in the third inning, singling on a bunt, stealing second and advancing to third on a sacrifice hit. Megan Salm had the other hit for the Buccaneers, connecting on a seeing-eye single through the left side following Tara Grode's walk. After a Jen Zucker sacrifice both were stranded.
In the nightcap against Trine, the Thunder also took advantage of miscues to jump in front. TU scored twice in ach of the first and second innings, with three of the four runs being unearned. They added a solo run in the third, three more in the fourth and two unearned scores in the fifth.
The Bucs had no luck at the plate. Emily Dorjath was the lone baserunner for Beloit with a fourth-inning, two-out walk in the no-hitter.
The Buccaneers have Wednesday off to regroup before playing Widener University and Westminster College, both of Pennsylvania, on Thursday starting at 9:00 a.m. EST.
