Waukegan, IL -- The Beloit College Softball team went 1-2 on the first day of the Midwest Conference Classic Saturday, defeating Illinois College 2-1 in eight innings in the opener before falling to Monmouth College 6-4 and Lake Forest College 3-1.
In the win over IC, McKenzie Falker singled in Praises Vega, who had reached on an error, to put Beloit on top. The Lady Blues tied it with a home run in the top of the sixth with a home run, forcing extra innings. Katy Sandt won it with a walk-off, one-out single in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Emily Dorjath, who had doubled.
Sandt got the mound win as well, giving up four hits while striking out six. Sandt, Kourtney Kingslien and Megan Salm each had two hits.
In the loss to Monmouth, the Fighting Scots jumped on top with two in the top of one before the Buccaneers cut that lead in half in the bottom of the inning on a Falker single, scoring Vega, who had doubled. Monmouth added three more in the second to go up 5-1 .
Beloit pulled back to within a run with three in the third inning. Salm and Kingslien both scored on errors and Sandt drove in the third run with a fielder's choice. But that's as close as they would get. MC closed the scoring with a run in the seventh.
Vega had two hits in the contest.
In the day's final game against LFC, the Foresters jumped on top in the bottom of the second with a home run but Beloit tied it in the top of the third when Tara Grode plated Lisa McClure with a groundout. But Lake Forest scored twice in the fourth to seal the win.
The Buccaneers left the bases loaded in the fifth and got a single from Dorjath in the sixth but went in order in the seventh.
McClure finished with two hits.
The Bucs have two more games at the Classic on Sunday, playing Grinnell College at noon and Knox College at 2:00 p.m.
