Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Softball team was definitely looking for better results as they opened the 2012 home schedule on a Summer-like day at the Strong Complex Softball Field. Instead undefeated Wheaton College took a pair of games, winning 4-1 and 8-0.
The opener was a nail-biter for five innings. Kandace Fox gave the Buccaneers a 1-0 lead in the fourth with a long double to left, scoring Tara Grode, who had singled, from first base. On the defense, Katy Sandt was giving the Thunder nothing with a no-hitter thru the first five.
Wheaton got their first hit of the game leading off the sixth, a clean single to center, and that runner came around to tie the game at one each four batters later on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. WC secured the win with three runs on four hits in the top of the seventh. Beloit got a leadoff single by Emily Dorjath in the bottom of the inning but she was stranded at first.
Grode had two of the Bucs' five hits.
The Thunder jumped on top with a run in the first in game two and then pulled away with five tallies in the third and two more in the fourth to make it 8-0.
Dorjath had the lone hit for the Buccaneers in the game - a two-out bloop single behind third base in the second inning.
Beloit has some time off before hitting the diamond again on Saturday, March 24, when they host Loras College and Rockford College in a triangular at the Strong Complex. The Bucs play Loras at 11:00 a.m. and Rockford at 3:00 p.m. The two visitors play at 1:00 p.m.
