Kissimmee, FL -- The Beloit College Softball team got their 2012 season off to a winning start before settling for a split of their two games on opening day at the Rebel Spring Games Sunday.
The Bucs opened with a 7-2 win over Westminster College of Pennsylvania before falling to Baldwin Wallace College of Ohio 12-0.
In the opener Beloit jumped on top in the first when Praises Vega doubled, went to third on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch. They made it 3-0 in the top of the second when Katy Sandt tripled in Laura Byrne, who had singled to open the inning, and McKenzie Falker singled in Sandt.
After WC got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second the Buccaneers scored twice more in the fourth on RBI singles by Kandace Fox and Sarah Stariha to make it 5-1.
The Titans got their second run in the fourth before the Bucs closed out the scoring in the fifth when Vega hit a two-run double to score Lisa McClkure and Byrne.
Sandt got the win, scattering seven hits while striking out four and walking two. Kourtney Kingslien and Byrne both collected four hits in the game to lead the 16-hit attack.
In game two, the Buccaneers couldn't get going as the Yellowjackets scored three in the top of the first, four in the fourth and five in the sixth.
Beloit had four hits, one each by Kingslien, Falker, McClure and Emily Dorjath.
The Buccaneers play two more games on Monday, starting with Bluffton University at 11:00 a.m. followed by Methodist University at 1:00 p.m.
