Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Softball team split a pair of Midwest Conference games with Ripon College at the Strong Complex Softball Field on Sunday, winning game one 2-0 before falling 4-2 in the nightcap.
The games were originally scheduled to be played in Ripon on Saturday. But rain Saturday in Ripon postponed the games and the condition of RC's field forced the move to Beloit. Ripon was the home team in both games Sunday.
In the opener, Katy Sandt twirled her third shut out of the season, scattering five hits while striking out seven, walking two and hitting a batter. Her strikeout in the third inning was the 300th of her career, making her just the third Buccaneer pitcher with 300 career strikeouts.
The Bucs broke up the pitchers dual with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth. After Tess Jacquez doubled, the first Beloit hit of the game, she came around to score when Sandt's sacrifice attempt was thrown away, with Sandt advancing to second. Sarah Stariha sacrificed Sandt to third and she scored on Laura Byrne's groundout for the only two runs of the game.
In game two Beloit jumped on top in the second when Praises Vega singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice. She scored the first run of the game, unearned, when Jacquez reach on an error with two out.
The Buccaneers made it 2-0 in the third when Stariha walked, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Kandace Fox and then scored on the front end of a double steal.
The Red Hawks grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the third with their only runs of the day, getting four on a three-run home run and a successful squeeze bunt.
The Bucs had only two base runners in their last four at-bats.
The Buccaneers play a non-conference doubleheader at Rockford College on Wednesday before getting back into MWC play next Saturday against Carroll in Beloit.
