Buccaneers Hand Out End-of-the-Year Awards

Beloit, WI -- Catcher Sarah Stariha and pitcher Katy Sandt earned the top honors as the Beloit College Softball team closed the books on their 2010 season with an end-of-the-year banquet.

Stariha was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year after leading the team in ten offensive categories, including hitting .391 while tying for the second-most hits in season in Beloit history with 43. She also stole 20 bases, the third most ever in a season, had six doubles and recorded a .473 slugging percentage and a .472 on-base percentage.

Sandt was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year after recording seven victories on the mound in 30 appearances, including 20 starts, and 156.1 innings pitched. She struck out 103, giving her a two-season total of 235, which ranks fourth on the Beloit career list. She had a .961 fielding percentage, making just three errors in 129 chances.

Laura Byrne earned the Hustle Award after leading the team in RBIs with 15 and triples with three. She also stole six bases and led the team with 13 sacrifice bunts. She had a .949 fielding percentage, committing seven errors in 138 chances at second base.

Allegera Stanton, the only first-year player on the squad, earned the Most Improved Player Award while recording two wins on the mound in 67 innings pitched with 19 strikeouts. She also had 13 hits, including two doubles, and eight RBIs.

Nicole Oddo, the lone senior on this year’s squad, earned the team’s Buc Pride Award after finishing up her four-year career.
