Buccaneers Go 2-1 on First Day of MWC Classic

Janesville, WI -- The Beloit College Softball team went 2-1 on the opening day of the 2010 Midwest Conference Softball Classic, being played at Dawson Park in Janesville.

Beloit defeated Monmouth College 2-1 in the opener, fell to Grinnell College 9-3 in their second game and then shut out Knox College 5-0 in the nightcap.

Against Monmouth, McKenzie Falker got the Bucs going in the opening inning with a run-scoring single, scoring Sarah Stariha. Monmouth tied it up in the top of the second on a passed ball before the Buccaneers took the lead for good in the bottom of three on Falker's second RBI single of the game, again scoring Stariha.

Katy Sandt took over from there, shutting down MC with four strikeouts while allowing three hits.

In game two against Grinnell, Beloit a single run in the first, second and third innings. Falker drove in the first-inning run with a single, Lisa McClure scored in the second on a wild pitch, and Allegera Stanton got a fielder's choice RBI in the third. But a three-run home run by the Pioneers tied it in the bottom of the fourth and they tacked on two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth for the win.

McClure finished the game with two hits.

In the final game of the day against Knox, Sandt struck out ten while scattering five hits and both Laura Byrne and Nicole Oddo drove in two runs apiece.

Oddo hit a two-run single in the bottom of the second to put the Bucs on top for good. Stanton made it 3-0 in the third with a fielder's choice RBI and then Byrne closed out the scoring with a two-run base hit in the fourth.

Sandt struck out six of the first 11 batters she faced on the way to her second win of the day. Stariha, Byrne, Sandt and Oddo each had two hits in the game.

Sandt finished the first day with 18 strikeouts and just three walks. Stariha went 5-11 in the three games.

The Buccaneers open up the second day of the Classic at 10:00 a.m. when they take on Lake Forest College on Sunday. They then take on Illinois College at 12:00 noon to complete their run.
