Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Women's Basketball team gave themselves an early present with a 94-87 win over Knox College on Thursday night in Flood Arena, a win that pushed them over the .500 mark in Midwest Conference play heading into the Holidays.
Lana Wieseman scored 34 points to lead the Bucs, tying the Beloit single-game scoring mark she now shares with Nancy Habetler, who had 34 against Mount Mary on February 3, 1981. Wieseman hit on 14 of 22 field goals and added six of seven free throws. She also had 10 rebounds.
The Buccaneers stormed out to a 21-9 lead just over six minutes into the contest but Knox answered with a 19-4 run over the next five minutes to take a three-point 28-25 lead. After regaining the lead, Beloit closed out the last five minutes of the half on a 13-1 run to head to the lockerroom with a 52-38 advantage.
The lead was still 14 at the 13:29 mark of the second half before KC went on a six-minute 19-7 run to pull back within 74-72 with 7:16 remaining. But it was Beloit's turn to regroup. After the Prairie Fire was within 80-77 with 3:43 left, the Bucs got the lead quickly back up to 10 and never let Knox closer than six the rest of the way.
Besides Wieseman's big outing, Lauren McNanna had 18 points. Nora Polaski added 12 rebounds and Laura Panicali dished out five assists.
The teams combined for 52 fouls and 57 free throw attempts. Beloit shot 53.1% from the field for the game, including 62.5% in the opening half.
The Buccaneers now take their momentum to California for the University of Redlands Winter Classic. Beloit plays the host team on Friday, December 27, before taking on Chapman University the next night. Friday's game begins at 7:00 p.m. Pacific time while Saturday's is at 5:00 p.m.
