MWC Releases 2013 Preseason Coaches Polls for Baseball, Softball

Ripon, WI – The Midwest Conference Baseball coaches have picked the Buccaneers for third in the North Division while the Softball coaches slotted the Bucs fifth in the North.  Both polls were released this week.

For Baseball, St. Norbert College received four first-place votes to claim the top spot in the Division while Ripon College got the other first-place vote to hold second.  Carroll University in fourth and Lawrence University in fifth followed Beloit.

Illinois College and Grinnell College both received two first-place votes in the South Division, with IC narrowly taking the top spot.  Knox College got the final first-place vote for third followed by Monmouth College and Cornell College.

Dave DeGeorge begins his 23rd season as head coach of the Buccaneers, who are coming off a 19-21 overall record, including 9-7 in the MWC, from 2012.  Beloit advanced to the MWC Tournament Championship Game last Spring for the third time in four season before falling to St. Norbert.

The Bucs open their season on March 3 in Winter Haven, Florida, when they take on Loras College as part of the RussMatt Central Florida Invite.  The home opener is scheduled for Sunday, March 24, against Milwaukee School of Engineering at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium.

On the Softball side, Carroll University and St. Norbert College both received two first-place votes and tied for the top spot in the North Division.  Ripon College got the final first-place vote to take third.  Lawrence University is fourth ahead of the Bucs.

Cornell College and Lake Forest College both received three first-place votes in the South Division, with Cornell narrowly taking the top spot.  Monmouth College was third and Illinois College fourth followed by Knox College and Grinnell College.

Kim Zarling begins her sixth as head coach of the Bucs and her 18th as a collegiate head coach.  Beloit was 9-24 last season, including 3-5 in the MWC.

The Buccaneers open their season on March 3 in Kissimmee, Florida, in the Rebel Spring Games, taking on Bluffton University and Simpson College.  The home opener is set for Saturday, March 16, when they host Concordia University Chicago and Loras College in the Beloit Triangular at the Strong Complex Softball Field.
