Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Softball team battled in both games but dropped a doubleheader to Benedictine University, falling 9-1 and 7-3.
In the opener the Eagles got on the board in the top of the first before Beloit tied it up in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with three straight hits. Emily Dorjath then drove in April Apfelbaum to make it a 1-1 game. BU then scored three times in the second, once in the third and twice in the fourth and sixth to push the lead to 9-1. The Bucs threatened in several innings but couldn't get the big hit.
Megan Salm had to hits for the Buccaneers.
In game two the Eagles scored twice in the top of the first, one unearned, and held that advantage until the fifth when they tacked on two more, both unearned. They made it 6-0 in the sixth with a pair of runs and added a seventh run in the seventh inning.
Beloit finally got things going with three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Dorjath walked to lead off the inning and, after the first out, pinch-runner Apfelbaum advanced to third on an error while Emelie Thern reached on a fielder's choice. Jordyn Ciochon then scored Apfelbaum with a double down the left field line, with pinch-runner Praises Vega advancing to third. Pinch-hitter Carrie Campbell then singled in both Vega and Ciochon to pull the Bucs within 7-3 but that was as close as they'd get as Benedictine got the final two outs.
The Buccaneers close out their home season on Senior Day Saturday when they host St. Norbert College in a 1:00 p.m. Midwest Conference doubleheader.
