Beloit, WI -- It was not a fun home-opening weekend for the Beloit College Softball team.
The Buccaneers dropped a pair of games to Ripon College 3-2 and 10-2 as they started Midwest Conference play on Saturday and then dropped two to the University of Chicago on Sunday 16-1 and 9-3.
In Sunday's games, the Maroons scored three in the first, four in the second, and nine in the fifth to end the game early in the opener. A highlight for Beloit was Taurie Burns' first career home run, the lone hit for the Bucs, leading off the fourth inning. In game two UC jumped on top with one in the second and third innings, three in the fourth and two more in the fifth before the Buccaneers got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Jordyn Ciochon and Bethany Stavrakas both scored on a wild throw. After Chicago plated two more in the sixth Tara Grode closed out the scoring with a run-scoring single in the seventh.
Stavrakas had a pair of bunt singles in game two and scored twice.
Back on Saturday, Ripon scored three runs in the third inning and made it stand up in the game one win. Beloit scored in the first when Tala Cornell tripled and scored on April Apfelbaum's groundout. After RC's third-inning uprising, the Bucs inched to within a run on Cornell's home run leading off the fifth. But that was as close as they'd get, stranding a runner in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh innings. Cornell had three hits in the game.
In the nightcap, the Red Hawks scored twice in the first, second and third innings and added four in the sixth to end it early. The Buccaneers got both of their runs in the second, which at the time cut Ripon's lead in half, on a single by Burns and a double from Emily Dorjath.
Beloit has the week off before heading for the Midwest Classic in East Peoria, Illinois. They play two games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the annual MWC crossover event. First game Friday is at 1:00 p.m., Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
