Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Baseball team got the Midwest Conference portion off to a good start with a sweep of Lawrence University at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium on Saturday, winning 5-0 and 4-3.
But they'll have to hold their momentum after Sunday's last two games of the series in Appleton were postponed due to unplayable fields. Those two games are now rescheduled for Tuesday at Lawrence beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Ryan Kaveney pitched a complete game four-hitter in the opener on Saturday, striking out 13 and not walking a batter. Ethan Blumenthal provided the big hit at the plate, hitting a two-run double in the fourth to break open a 1-0 game.
The Bucs took the lead for good in the first when Alex Lawrence scored on a wild pitch. After Blumenthal made it 3-0 with his two-out double in the fourth Danny Corral added another run with a run-scoring single in the fifth. Beloit closed out the scoring in the eighth on Adrian Peil's RBI double.
In game two the Buccaneers got eight strong innings from Jim Leyhane, who gave up nine hits, struck out seven and walked one in addition to giving up the three LU runs. Beloit scored the game-winner in the seventh when Alex Lawrence's fielder's choice plated Mike Gulve with an unearned run. Andrew Kane closed it out in the ninth, getting a strikeout and a game-ending 5-4-3 double play.
The Vikings scored three times in the first to jump on top. Beloit got one back in the bottom of the inning when Lawrence knocked in Peil with fielder's choice. The Bucs pulled to within 3-2 in the third on Lawrence's RBI single and then tied it in the sixth on a Kam Sallee single, setting up what proved to be the game-winner in the seventh.
