Buccaneers Settle for Home-Opening Split

April 1, 2014 at 8:37 pm

Craig VruwinkBeloit, WI -- The Beloit College Baseball team finally played on their home field on Tuesday, settling for a non-conference split with Wisconsin Lutheran College.  The Buccaneers dropped the opener 9-8 before winning game two 6-3.

In the nightcap, Craig Vruwink allowed the three runs on four hits, striking out two and walking four in the complete-game win, the first win of his career.

The Bucs gave Vruwink all the runs he'd need in the first inning, scoring four times.  Austin Martinez drove in the first run with a single and then, with two out, Kam Sallee singled in the second run of the inning.  Tyler Peacock capped it off with a two-run bloop single to make it 4-0.  There was no scoring until the fifth when the Warriors plated a run on a pair of singles.  But Beloit scored twice in the sixth on an Alex Lawrence single and Jake Parrott's sacrifice fly to left.  WLC scored two runs in the seventh before three straight groundouts to Sean Little at third ended the contest.

Martinez finished with two hits in the game.

The opener was a heartbreaker for Beloit.  After Wisconsin Lutheran scored twice in the top of the first the Bucs put together a six-run second inning to take control.  Danny Corral opened the scoring with an RBI groundout, Mike Gulve had a run-scoring single and Adrian Peil an RBI double before Lawrence smashed a two-run double off the fence in right center.  Martinez closed out the inning with an RBI single.

The Warriors scored a run in the fourth to cut into the lead but the Buccaneers plated two in the bottom of the inning on a second off-the-fence double by Lawrence and an RBI single by Zach Jenkins to make it 8-3.  WLC made it 8-5 with a pair of runs in the sixth and then took the lead with four runs in the top of the seventh, two of them unearned, and held Beloit down in the bottom of the inning for the win.

The Bucs now prepare for the opening of Midwest Conference play this weekend, playing two at Lawrence University on Saturday before hosting the Vikings for two more on Sunday at the Ballpark.  First pitch both days is at 1:00 p.m.
