Buccaneers Drop Doubleheader at Knox

March 30, 2014 at 9:10 pm

Galesburg, IL -- It was a long day on the diamond Sunday for the Beloit College Baseball team as they dropped both games of a doubleheader at Knox College, falling 9-8 in 10 innings in the opener and then 15-9 in the second game.

In game one, the Bucs rallied from a four-run deficit after the Prairie Fire jumped on top in the third.  Ethan Blumenthal started the rally with a two-run double in the fifth.  After KC added a run in the sixth Beloit put six runs on the board in the seventh to grab an 8-5 lead.  Alex Lawrence, Austin Martinez, Tyler Peacock and Matt Meade all had RBI singles in the inning.  But Knox scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, winning it with an unearned run in the tenth.

Adrian Peil, Blumenthal, Lawrence, Martinez and Peacock all had two hits in the game.

In the nightcap, Knox again jumped out in front with four runs in the second.  But, again, Beloit fought back, beginning with Blumenthal's two-run single in the third to cut the deficit in half.  KC tacked on a run in the third but the Buccaneers scored three times in the fifth to tie it at 5-all.  Martinez had an RBI groundout, Jake Parrott a sacrifice fly and Danny Corral a run-scoring single.

Knox regained the lead with two in the bottom of the fifth but the Bucs tied it again with two of their own in the sixth, with Adrian Peil's double and Blumenthal's single plating the runs.  The Prairie Fire took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of six and then made it 12-7 with two more in the seventh.  Beloit tried to rally one more time, getting back to within three on Martinez' two-run home run in the eighth but that was as close as they'd get as Knox scored three in the bottom of the inning and then shut down the Buccaneers in the ninth for the sweep.

Peil, Blumenthal and Corral all had three hits in the game.

The Buccaneers have little time to regroup, hosting Wisconsin Lutheran College in a make-up doubleheader on Tuesday at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium.  First pitch for the home opener is at 1:00 p.m.
