Auburndale, FL -- The Beloit College Baseball team put all the pieces together on Friday in their third doubleheader of the week, sweeping Cazenovia College of New York 9-2 and 11-0.
Ryan Kaveney got the mound win in game one, giving up two first-inning runs before shutting down the Wildcats the rest of the way. Alex Lawrence was the primary run-producer, going 3-4 with four RBIs, though there were a host of others who more than chipped in.
After CC grabbed the early lead the Buccaneers got one back in the bottom of the first on Jake Parrott's two-out RBI single, scoring Ethan Blumenthal. They took the lead for good in the second inning, the big blows being two-run singles by Lawrence and Parrott. They closed out the scoring with four more in the fifth, with Lawrence hitting a two-run double, Sean Little a run-scoring triple and Mike Gulve an RBI single.
In game two Jim Leyhane was the beneficiary of a big offensive output, though he didn't do so bad himself. While recording the shutout he allowed just three hits, striking out four and walking one. Just one Cazenovia runner reached as far as third, and that was on a pair of errors in the third inning.
Beloit got all the runs Leyhane would need in the top of the first when Lawrence's RBI groundout scored Adrian Peil. They added another run in the second on a double play and three in the fifth with Peil hitting a run-scoring single and Lawrence a sacrifice fly. They put an exclamation point on the win with six runs in the top of the seventh, all unearned because of three errors. Austin Martinez had a two-run single while Lawrence drove in his seventh run of the day.
The Buccaneers close out their trip on Saturday when they play a doubleheader with Alfred State College of New York. Action begins at 9:00 a.m. in Auburndale.
