Bucs Muscle Up For Win vs. Mitchell, Lose Second Game to Rain

March 12, 2014 at 2:48 pm

Buccaneer SoftballWinter Haven, FL -- The Beloit College Softball team showed their long-ball ability in an 8-0 whitewashing of Mitchell College CT but had their second game of the day, against second-ranked Montclair State University NJ, washed out by passing storms on Wednesday.

A possible makeup for the Montclair State game is being worked on.

But for the game that was actually played the Buccaneers showed little mercy.  Beloit, the home team, scored six times in the first inning.  Bethany Stavrakas scored on the front end of a double steal with Tala Cornell for the first run and Tara Grode plated Cornell with a fielder's choice groundout.  Then the heavy lumber came out.

Mikayla Martin singled to the hole at short and Emily Dorjath clubbed a two-run home run to the left of center field to make it 4-0.  Then April Apfelbaum doubled off the left fielder's glove and Emalie Thern followed with the second two-run homer of the inning to the right of center field to make it 6-0.

Two batters into the top of the second the rains came and postponed the game for an hour-plus.  Once the field was readied for play the Bucs struck again in the bottom of the second.  Stavrakas doubled down the left field line and Cornell hit the third two-run home run of the game for Beloit, her second round-tripper of the season, to make it 8-0.  The game was called after Mitchell batted in the top of the fifth by the eight-run rule.

Martin handled things from there, scattering four hits while getting her first career shutout in her second career complete game.  She struck out three, walked none and hit a batter.

Stavrakas and Thern paced the offense with two hits each.

The Buccaneers are next scheduled to play Thomas More College KY and Geneva College PA on Thursday beginning at 3:30 p.m. ET.
