Winter Haven, FL -- The Beloit College Softball team played their third and fourth close games on the second day of their Spring Trip, defeating Westminster College of Pennsylvania 3-0 in the opener on Monday before dropping a 3-2 decision to Illinois Wesleyan University.
In the win over Westminster, Jen Zucker allowed just two hits for her first win of the season, striking out two. Beloit scored twice in the bottom of the first to take control. Emily Dorjath had a run-scoring double and Tara Grode knocked in the second run with an RBI groundout. The Bucs tacked on their third run in the third inning when Tala Cornell doubled home Bethany Stavrakas with an unearned run. Stavrakas had two hits to lead the five-hit attack.
In the loss to Illinois Wesleyan the Titans scored twice in the bottom of the opening inning and held that lead until the fourth when Mikayla Martin walked with the bases loaded and Emalie Thern had a pinch-hit single to tie the game at 2. IWU scored what held up as the game-winner with two outs in the fifth. The Bucs went down in order in the final two innings.
The Buccaneers have Tuesday off. They get back at it on Wednesday when they play Mitchell College of Connecticut at 9:00 a.m. followed by a match-up with second-ranked Montclair State University of New Jersey at 11:00.
