Winter Haven, FL -- The Beloit College Softball team got a 3-0 win over Defiance College in their second game on Sunday to garner a split on opening day of the 2014 season. The Bucs fell to Simpson College 2-0 in the season opener earlier in the day.
Megan Salm scattered seven hits and Tala Cornell drove in a pair of runs to lead Beloit to the win over Defiance.
Praises Vega was hit by a pitch, stole second, and then scored on Cornell's first-inning single to give the Bucs all the runs they'd need. Mykenzie Larsen, running for Willow Macy, who had singled, stole second and third and scored on April Apfelbaum's bunt to make it 2-0 in the second. Cornell then hit a solo home run to close out the scoring in the fifth.
Tara Grode also went 2-3 on the game.
In the opener, the Buccaneers could only manage Vega's single in the top of the seventh in the loss to Simpson.
The Storm got to Jen Zucker in the second for both of their runs, the second unearned. Zucker also got out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the sixth to keep Beloit within striking distance.
The Bucs take on Westminster College of Pennsylvania at 9:00 a.m. ET on Monday followed by Illinois Wesleyan University at 1:00 p.m. in day two of their young season.
